Contemporary Development Debate – Fighting Extreme Poverty in the 21st Century (12.04.–13.04.2022)

Although there has been considerable progress in reducing poverty over the last decades, a world free of extreme poverty, as proclaimed by SDG 1, is still far from reach. Around 10% of the global population still lives at or below the $1.90 poverty line. How can we make more progress? The aim of the course is to discuss this question based on recently published books. Course participants will learn about and reflect on the potential of a global basic income, China’s development model, experimental approaches and behavioural science to reduce poverty. Critically discussing books on these topics with various experts from academia and practice will broaden participants’ views on contemporary debated approaches to reducing global poverty.
